TITLE: Casualty Claims Trainee

JOB SUMMARY: Develops skills and acquires knowledge necessary to investigate and resolve personal lines liability/bodily injury claims via telephone or face-to-face investigation or negotiation. Responsible for the handling of claims in accordance with prescribed authority and according to claims best practices.

LOCATION: Property Casualty Claims Standard
RELATIONSHIP: Reports to Claims Manager

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Determines proper policy coverages, and where necessary, investigates, evaluates, negotiates and equitably settles all assigned liability/casualty claims cases in accordance with company guidelines. Learns to utilize best claims practices.

2. May serve as the single point of contact for personal lines material damage claims including non-standard.

3. Plans and executes all time schedules necessary to promptly and effectively conclude all assigned cases; adheres to high standards of professional conduct while providing the delivery of superior claims service.

4. Authorizes and/or approves all claims payments within the delegated authority.

5. Prepares and submits initial and follow-up reports of findings and action taken on each assigned claim in conformity with established procedures.

6. Works in partnership with sales and underwriting in the acquisition and preservation of desirable risks. Advised underwriting of any possible risks.

7. Prepare files for reassignment as needed.

8. Submits administrative reports as required.

9. Properly maintains all assigned company equipment.

10. Performs all other duties as required.

NOTE: This classification is for newly hired claims representatives who must undergo a formal training period. All employees assigned to this classification are considered to be nonexempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and are therefore eligible for overtime payments. Once the training period is successfully completed, employees should be moved to the Band D Casualty Claims Representative classification.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Knowledge: Undergraduate degree preferred. Ability to acquire State licensing where required. General knowledge of business practices and procedures. Prefer familiarity with various property/casualty insurance products.

Experience: None if hold degree; or four years experience in a claims, customer service or medical environment including flexible work schedule.

Skills: Ability to acquire skills necessary to make decisions and resolve conflicts in such areas as application of coverages to submitted claims, application of laws of jurisdiction to investigatory facts, application of policy exclusions and exceptions. Ability to effectively prioritize work. Written and verbal communication skills for contact and/or negotiation with policyholders, claimants, attorneys, physicians, agents and the general public. Ability to efficiently operate personal computer and software for claims-related and other business applications.

Working Conditions: Field or office claims environment. May require ability to sit and operate telephone and personal computer for extended periods of time.
